Daily life

At home, they are felt and silence. Outside, muscle and lightning. The Ridgeback is a domesticated paradox, and that is precisely what won us over.

Bred by Cape Boer farmers to track lion without attacking it, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a scenthound whose ridge of reverse-growing hair along the spine is its signature. That ridge, from which the breed gets its name, runs against the lay of the coat in a clean line from the withers to the hips.
In daily life, the Ridgeback is calm in the home, watchful without being a barker, and deeply attached to its family. He tolerates extended solitude poorly, prefers to live indoors with his people, and asks for a steady hand from his owner: firm but never harsh. A remarkable athlete, he needs long walks and particularly thrives on properties where he can run.
Training should begin early, since the breed is intelligent but can be independent. Well socialised, he becomes an utterly reliable companion, particularly gentle with the children of the family.
